Urban Vertical Micro-Gardening in Kampala

It is upon this background that we as Makerere University have come up with an integrated waste management initiative known as urban Micro gardening. This initiative will not only reduce the quantity of waste on the streets of Uganda’s capital, but also, it will assist Ugandans tackle the food insecurity challenge by establishing mini-backyard and roof top gardens on an intensive farming basis. I. To make productive use of urban waste within the university and beyond. II. To educate, engage and empower students and members of the urban and rural-urban community in climate-smart farming practices through research, innovation and interaction. II To build strong, effective and empowered student extension and innovation teams that work with communities to address prevalent agricultural and livelihood related challenges. IV To build and strengthen the resilience of urban and rural –urban people by building their capabilities to harness their resources more sustainably and productively. V. To orient communities towards using limited resources to increase productivity.
