This Summer we lost a warrior for the planet….
IDEAS for Us President Chris Castro (Pictured Left) and Hudson Lowe (Pictured Right)
Four years ago, Hudson Lowe came out to The Hive Orlando after stumbling on IDEAS For Us over the Internet. After speaking with him for 5 minutes I immediately realized he was an extraordinary person, a born prodigy, a junior in high school who was already getting engaged and exploring ways to start his own environmental organization at Ocoee HS to engage his fellow peers in eco-action.
Seeing his potential, I began to work with him weekly as a mentor to foster his potential and begin sharpening his skills as a student organizer, connecting him to every possible outlet that would advance his mission. After 3 months, we started the IDEAS chapter at Ocoee, and within a year he had transformed his school into a top winner in the OCFL Green School Recognition Program!
Hudson didn’t stop there…after graduating Ocoee HS he was accepted to FAU where he continued his leadership on campus. I connected him to a The GREEN Program international exchange to learn about renewable energy in Iceland! Hudson and I also got trained by Al Gore and the Climate Reality Project in Miami and traveled to several conferences together. We also worked at the Central Florida Earth Day over the last 4 years and was one of the few who helped us with Fleet Farming in our early days more than 3 years ago.
Out of the thousands of youth leaders I’ve engaged with over the last decade, Hudson was undoubtedly in the top 1%, and if you ever met Hudson you would realize the same thing. I’m saddened to say that over the summer, Hudson passed away and went on to a better place, but his work will continue to live on through IDEAS, my efforts, and his amazing family. Let this be a reminder that life is too short and we should spend every waking minute working on whatever we are passionate about and whatever makes us happy, as if it’s our last.
As Hudson would say, if you ever fall down, make sure to #FallForward, get back up, and keep your eyes on the prize.
We love you bro. RIP
