Meet the Newest IDEAS Fellow, John Gakumba from Rwanda

IDEAS For Us is honored to welcome John Gakumba to Central Florida as the 2016 IDEAS Community Solutions Fellow from the U.S. Department Of State Program implemented by IREX. His host and mentor will be Executive Director Clayton Louis Ferrara.

John works with a civil development group where he essentially looks for grants to support environmental issues of his home country of Rwanda and during his time in America he’ll be getting a close look on the inner workings of the IDEAS movement as well as to help the organization continue its work in creating sustainable solutions.


Where are you from? Where did you go to school?

I am from Kigali, Rwanda. I Graduated from College of Science and Technology of the University of Rwanda.

What brings you to the United States?

I am participating in the IREX Community Solutions Program under the Department of State of the U.S.

What inspired you to be involved in the environmental movement?

I am a humanist. I advocate for human welfare but in a co-existence of mother nature.

How did you hear about IDEAS For Us?

I heard about IDEAS For Us from the Department of State within the circles of IREX Team for Community Solutions Program.

Of the 5 pillars of sustainability (energy, water, food, waste, and ecology), which is the most important to you? And why?

The Nexus of Energy, Water and Food are my best selection. They intersect with each other in a symbiotic manner and they are basis for my inspiration; bringing out the best for welfare of humans and the environment.

How many languages do you speak? What is your native language?

I speak a fluently not less than seven languages. Natively, I speak Kinyarwanda.
